Distinguished and Famous people from Campbelltown
🩺 William Redfern
Surgeon William Redfern received a land grant in the Airds district in 1818 and named the property Campbell Fields. His medical career had followed transportation to New South Wales for his involvement in the Nore naval mutiny. In the colony he qualified to practise and became an influential advocate for improvements to conditions aboard convict transports, including medical supervision. Campbelltown's connection is the estate he developed here; the Sydney suburb of Redfern derives from a different property associated with the same man.
🏛️ Thomas Reddall
Thomas Reddall was the first incumbent of St Peter's Anglican Church in Campbelltown and also served as a local magistrate. Trained as a chaplain and schoolmaster, he established a small school that taught Governor Macquarie's son and other pupils from the district. His overlapping responsibilities reflect a period when religious, educational and civic authority were closely connected. The church's early history preserves his local role, while the school he ran should be distinguished from the modern institution bearing St Peter's name.
